The lift truck or forklift is a powered equipment utilized most often for the lifting and transporting of goods and supplies in warehouse and industrial settings. These machinery are normally utilized in the warehousing, dockside, construction and mining applications.

The forklift could be referred to lots of different names, depending on their functions. A few different examples of these names include: trailer loaders, fork trucks, lift trucks and stacker trucks. These kinds of machines are used throughout the world, mainly in the warehousing and manufacturing industry.

The very first forklifts made their debut during the mid 19th century and the start of the 20th century, when they were used as part of the construction of the 1906 Pennsylvania railroad. At that time, platform trucks were introduced to help in the transportation of products. These first platform trucks run on batteries. The trucks regained their popularity during WWI when extreme labor shortages happened because of all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts really arrived on the market to stay.

There are basically 2 main kinds of forklift: those dealing with heavy cargo and those that could handle light loads. The light models consist of: towing tractors, side loaders, walkie starters and hand pallet trucks. These machines are built for handling lighter loads and they are not ideal for very heavy cargo. The specific load capacity of the machine is posted on the machine itself and in the owner's manual. Some examples of the big truck types include: truck mounted forklifts, telescopic handlers and walkie order picking trucks.

There are a range of different models of forklifts available and many different variations of capacity and load. The majority of the time in warehouse operations, the lighter units is utilized. Larger models are often seen in the shipping industry. Some units have a tilting mast to make the load capable of bending so as to counteract any slipping.

The majority of units have rear steering wheels. This design aspect is to increase the ease in how the machinery is capable of being maneuvered. Additionally, this steering manner comes in very helpful when operating around corners. These types of machines could be unstable due to their changing centers of gravity. It is a very good idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Yet another kind includes specialized forklifts. These machinery will comprise articulated counterbalance trucks and explosion proof trucks. The explosion proof trucks are used within factories and settings which deal with combustible materials.
